Langkawi 2019 day #3 #workisover-rated
Langkawi 2019 day #3 #workisover-rated was interview morning for me. Sat in beach attire, on our balcony, looking at the sea, with aeroplanes flying over, and then a huge tropical storm with thunder and lightening. 2.5 hours straight with two people. Shattered after that. And yes, it was a video interview – phew haha. So with that done, it was time to round up the gang from Kids Club in The Meritus and venture out on a food adventure and other things we have never done.
Our driver from the airport recommended a place called Orkid Ria. This is literally 2 minutes drive down the road from The Meritus, as we found out. SO should have walked haha, but it was just about to rain. So are we justified? Orkid Ria is at Lot 1225, Jalan Pantai Cenang. It’s a cracker. A lot like our favourite Chinese places in Singapore, Joe’s and hawkers. 15% of Langkawi’s population is Chinese so it is not overrun with Chinese food, in fact, there is a huge amount of Middle East offerings as well as more tradition Malay and Western.
Let’s get stuck into Langkawi 2019 day #3 #workisover-rated. It’s food, food and more food – and fun of course.

It’s a fish tank time. Yeah, excited Jude? I think so big time. What shall we choose mate?

For some reason, Amy wants to order two of them whatever we choose…

Jude wants to order Mantis Shrimp. Now there is a 1st. These things are evil. I think they have the fastest strike rate of any animal on the planet with spiky extensions from their head very much like a Praying Mantis, hence the name. Yep let’s eat two of those buggers, they deserve it.

Some very yummy food to come from a predominantly seafood restaurant. Amy goes with the Sizzling Chicken. This comes in a unique sweet-sour sticky sauce. Not like sweet n sour traditional Chinese fare, but more on the savoury side. An absolute cracker.

Here’s those Mantis Shrimp minus their talons now and steamed in a shit load of garlic. Again very unique this. Sort of a cross between lobster and a King prawn. Actually really quite nice. Meaty, juicy and not overly fishy. Yeah, we would absolutely have this again. I like! Wifey like. Amy like. Jude not try.

A bloody brilliant Black Pepper Beef up next. Super tender beef. I am assuming a wee bit of MSG and some tender loving hammer smacks on the beef. A gorgeous sauce though, an absolute winner. I even made a new dish up for ChillaxBBQ by adding some French fries to the sauce. I tell you what, this is a double winner Black Pepper Chips. Far out!!! Watch this space for a TM.

Jude goes for the Beef Fried Rice. WOW!!! Yeah, amaze-balls good this was. Stellar. We all got stuck into this. So so smoky and so flavourful. An absolute cracker!!!

Wifey, of course, gets stuck into steamed Mud Crab. This is also one we chose from the tank. Words such as; “OMG this tastes of the sea…. This is so very fresh… oooooohhhhhh…” etc. were emanating from her mouth. Make up your own mind!

Now, this is a 1st for me. Bean sprouts with garlic and a little Oyster sauce I think. How have I never had this whilst living in Singapore for 12 years? I cannot answer that. But I have not and neither has Amy. We destroyed this. Double good dish this is. Absolutely loved it.

Lunch over and rain-storm passes leaving a slight drizzle. On to our next adventure by visiting Langkawi Underwater World (see below for experience), but on the way, we espy this amazing resort that is fully functional an open. The Malibest Resort. Would you book here? Rustic, airy and urban comes to mind. Fark me… Hope the bar is good!
OK, Underwater World Langkawi is one to miss in my personal reckoning. It is tiny. It is under renovation. The tanks are minuscule for the fish, especially the one for the fur seals. I could not wait to get out of the place. It’s a wrong’un and I’d skip it if I were you. Make your tanks big. Spend some of the tourist money you have earned in doing that, and upgrading them to make some fun and interaction for the inhabitants. Not good. And to make matters worse the fuckers make you exit into a HUGE duty-free shopping mall which you can’t bloody get out of. Many hate all in one. BOYCOTT!!!

Leaving that nasty place we spot a sign directing us to another of the dining recommendations in Langkawi. The CLiff, right behind the kidlets. Lucky us, NOT, it is also closed for renovation opening on our last night 26/7. I did drop them an email to ask for a reservation but not reply. Hey, Ho their loss, Meritus gain as we dined there for the grill buffet – oh yes!!! Was looking forward to that.
Remember back top September 2017? Our last trip to Langkawi? Well we left The Westin one day for some exploring and the taxi guy dropped us off at a hotel, and we walked through to the beach. We then walked up that beach. We found a hotel with nice shade and a good menu and dined for lunch. We walked a little further up the beach and found this rather strange place with big wooden ‘houses’, that were almost Kampong-like. Remember these photos??? Well, bugger me if that isn’t the very beach we are on now and if the big wooden house place isn’t The Meritus Pelangi Resort, where we are staying now. We did not know this until we walked this beach. Amazing!

Back n 2017 this was the beach. It was off-season so very empty.

The full-gang was here this trip 2 years ago. We found this really nice place to chillax in the shade, get hydrated and have some grub. Little did we know we’d be in the resort next door in 2 years time.

This is like next door to The Meritus Pelangi. This is the Casa de Mar. I cannot comment on it at all, just that they do good shade and cold beer. Well, they did 2 years ago.

So today is Thursday and walking along the beach is thirsty work. So when we spotted a beach bar/restaurant called Thirstsday we clearly could not refuse a tryout. So in we trot. A cool place pumping out chillax vibes with a lovely beach view. Yeah, this is a people-watching territory. You relax in the blink of an eye. I like a lot. We all did.

Not a bad view right? It is tough living in South East Asia sometimes… Hmmmmm.

“Dad it’s Thirstday Thursday…”

Even the beer gets served in your very own ice cooler. Every new pint is served in fresh ice. It’s the details that count ha ha. And that is one that resonates with me!

A big Western push for an early dinner today. We saw some pizza get served to the table nearby and it became a mission to have some of this on the table for consumption. And yeah, it was awesome pizza. This is their signature 4-cheese and it was a stonker. Wow. I would certainly have this again and again. A 4 corner style so as not to mix the cheeses. Bloody nice. I did add a wee bit of Tobasco too and it was a wow moment for pizza.

Amy goes all gourmet like with smoked duck breast and mango. Holy cow. That’s a pizza topping? I thought we were fine dining in some French joint. Looking good though, looking good.

Wifey and Jude go Western too with the lamb rack with rosemary and mashed potatoes. Cremated nicely to wifey’s preference of well-done she and Jude were happy with the outcomes. It did look really nice actually so well played wifey and son. Good choice.

And to top it all they had creme brulee. Yep stick me down for one of those puppied, please! This was a brown sugar version. It was weird. Not set as it should be as a creme brulee, but the taste was really up there. Toffee apple-like. Yeah, sugar caramel type thing. Loved it. Great work Thirstday.
So there you have it folks Langkawi 2019 day #3 #workisover-rated. Today is much more of culinary experience and review than anything else. The family had fun at the hotel in the morning whilst I was busy. Lunch and dinner were great. It was also good to get out and explore. I will review nothing more than I have typed for Underwater World as it deserves nothing. I really disliked it. Not good. Spend some money you have accrued over the many years since opening and make it a happier place for your residents. I will share with you also something that surprised us all when we got back to the hotel room, but that comes in day #4 blog. An amazing Meritus Pelangi surprise. And a WOW! Anyways to close you have two restaurants to try if you happen to frequent this area of Langkawi. Bother different, both really quite good. Give em a go and – ENJOY!!!
