National Day 2019 & Joo Chiat Carnival
Singapore really do this stuff well. This was an incredible event to celebrate Singapore’s National Day ahead of National Day itself. But it was also celebrating Joo Chiat’s 60th Anniversary. This was National Day 2019 & Joo Chiat Carnival. For $5 a ticket. Yes, FIVE. You get free rides and attractions for the kids, snacks for free including popcorn and candy floss. Amazing shows on the stage, which included Amy dancing with Opera Estate School. Even food stalls, that had been hand-selected by Dr Leslie Tay, of ‘I Eat I Shoot’ fame. Yes, folks $5 a ticket. I wouldn’t think that even covered the printing so thank you Joo Chiat for laying this on for the local community it was bloody brilliant and the kids loved it. Thank you!!!
A couple of very small world things happened @ National Day 2019 & Joo Chiat Carnival; Our mates from Good Time Restaurant in Siglap were there front and centre selling my favourite Hurry Hurry Chicken Curry. Secondly, I got to meet and have a selfie with the lady that starred in Netflix’s StreetFood series – see that below. WOW!!! Lucky me. This place was like KF Seetoh’s StreetFood Congress with massive family entertainment to boot. Genius!!!
I am going to share all this off through the medium of video. There is a lot so take a seat.
So here I am with that lovely lady that was a super-star in Netflix’s StreetFood series. The amazing lady that moved to the USA to become a pastry-Chef, but came home to help Mum & Dad, with a then starting to fail hawker business. She and her new Hubbie turned it round with innovation in preparation whilst respecting the heritage of her parent’s recipes and preparation. Now a booing business with 5 branches. This is Putu Piring @ Haig Road. Honoured to briefly meet this amazing lady. Of course, we tried some too!!!
Yummo!!! Sweet and savoury, with amazing textures to boot. Loving that!
See what I mean about Seetoh’s StreetFood Congress? Bloody brilliant. A few of my favourites I have written about were here – Good Time of course, but also SpringLeaf Prata to mention another. Love it. Good choices Dr Leslie Tay.

Let the videos commence. Up 1st is a dance that Amy had done once before at Opera Estate open-day, I did blog that. This was the day when Opera Estate is encouraging new joiners (hopefully Jude is one). Here she comes.

I am doing these slightly out of order of occurrence but this next one is also a must-watch. The F1 electric cars were ACE, and Jude is pretty damned good. Remember him driving the Tezla in the Philippines? Well, he is driving in this car and gets rather competitive when another little lad gets a slightly faster one than he. Watch the bit where he is cutting the guys driving line, and then down the home-straight eyes him, waits for him to get alongside and then BOOM he smacks into him like a scene from Fast & Furious (Ollie & Amy did I really just reference that film?).

Next up is Jude on the bouncy castle assault course. See what I mean about how good this event was. It’s amazing. Again I will say it – all this for $5. Oh yeah also in this video is Jude on the hand-driven paddles boats in a swimming pool. You can’t make this stuff up. It is genius.

My Amy than decides to make a complete fool of herself by trying the spinning thing with huge padded paddles that you have to duck and jump over. The lad at the controls can speed it up and reverse directions. You can imagine the carnage. Well, you can watch the carnage. Bloody funny.

And the final one for the day is the boys. It is Virtual Reality time and Fruit Ninja. Mind you the more I look at them dong this game I think if you had Gangnam Style playing in the background you could also think that they were actually dancing to that. “Heyyyyyyyyyyy sexy lady……”
